2007 MTV VMA’s

Monday, September 10th, 2007

If you missed the MTV VMA’s last night, which is totally understandable if you did because, well, MTV sucks; you should at least check out Sarah Silverman’s opening bit which followed a less than amateur performance by Britney Spears. Silverman’s comedic style is so well suited for hosting award shows because she’s great at creating an awkward setting and is not afraid to call out certain “celebrities” for being stupid people in “real life.” Overall the show seemed to lack any genuine excitement. I’m not surprised. There is something about today’s American pop-culture that is disgustingly reminiscent about high school to me. Whatever…I’m blogging about it, which is what they want, right? Anyhow, watch the clip. You’ll feel pleasantly uncomfortable.

75 year old woman has world’s fastest Internet connection

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

With services like Verizon’s FiOS and Intel’s WiMAX emerging as a replacement for DSL and cable Internet connections, it’s clear that the world is moving toward faster and faster connectivity. Today, the average speed for broadband Internet service in the US is 1.9 megabits per second. While this is a huge leap up from the 56 kilobit per second dial-up connections we had not too long ago, it’s nothing compared to the connection that Sigbritt Löthberg of Karlstad, Sweden has.

Until recently when her son gave her one, Sigbritt, a 75 year old, never had a computer. Along with her new machine, her son set her up with an absurd 40 gigabit per second Internet connection– the world’s fastest connection, and thousands of times faster than the average person’s connection speed.

How is this possible? Well, it helps to have Peter Löthberg, who is Sweden’s (and, arguably the world’s) top optical Internet guru, as a son. Peter wanted to prove that both technically and commercially, it’s possible to provide ultrabroadband Internet connections to average people, even over long distances. What else to do than give ridiculous connectivity to his pensioning mother?

To put it in perspective, with a 40Gbps connection Sigbritt can watch 1,500 HDTV channels simultaneously, or download a full length HD-DVD in 2 seconds flat. And to illustrate just how feasible this is now and likely will be in the future for the masses, network boss Hafsteinn Jonsson said this: “The most difficult part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt’s PC.”

Lego Universe

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Having 2 boys has made me a big Lego fan and Lego knows it. Being target market #1 I’ve been notified of the coming Lego MMOG, Lego Universe. Will there be Lego guilds, Lego sex, Lego MMOG law suits, Lego 12 step programs…?

Even I may be tempted…

A Wireless, Floating, Powered-On Lightbulb?

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Call my crazy, but that’s exactly what I’ve got for you today. Back in 1890, Nikola Tesla invented wireless power, and in June of this year, a team at MIT demonstrated wireless power, or as they called it, WiTricity.

Now, Jeff Lieberman has taken this concept a step further with electromagnets, allowing his wirelessly-powered lightbulb to basically levitate.  It’s a piece of art, no doubt, but it’s functional too.  And as Lieberman points out,  the irony of this setup is that with both the levitation and power on, this lightbulb consumes less than half the energy a traditional wired lightbulb consumes!

I have a rasterbating problem…

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Need something cool to put on your wall, but low on cash like me? Well look no further than The Sect of Homokaasu’s free online ‘rasterbator.’ With this cool+free online app, you can create giant posters of your own images, in rasterized form. Just upload a photo (or grab one that already exists online), pick how many sheets of paper you’d like your image spread over, and tell The Sect the size of the paper on which you will be printing. Print out the PDF they generate for you, trim the sides of the paper, and tape it all together. Slap it on the wall, and voilà– you’ve got a badass, one-of-a-kind poster!

Here’s the one I made from a trip I took in Australia a few years back, versus the original image (keep in mind the rasterized version is about 24″ x 32″):

TSoH also has a gallery of very cool rasterized images..the ones in color are especially awesome!

Google Earth: Secret Flight Simulator!

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

In addition to the very cool Google Sky that comes as part of the newest version of Google Earth, an easter egg has surfaced: a hidden flight simulator!

To access the flight simulator, all you have to do is open Google Earth and hit Ctrl+Alt+A if you’re using Windows, or Command+Option+A (note it must be capital A) on a Mac. After you access it for the first time, the option to go back to the flight simulator remains under the Tools menu for easy access.

In the simulator, you can fly an F16 Viper or an easier to fly 4 seater, the SR22. Check it out, it’s pretty damn cool.
