Minor Travesty of the Week: The Baconator
September 23rd, 2008 by timbotronI went to Wendy’s this afternoon, I had to try their “Baconator” - in the name of science, bacon, and all that is awesome.
It was like when I found out that Santa Claus wasn’t real.
All the ingredients were there, but they didn’t look like the advertisement photos and they tasted like greasy sadness.

This type of thing is also why I will never go on dating websites or get a mail-order bride: rarely is anything as awesome as its marketing photo.

Wow. Great comparison. I never really considered that a baconator is like Myspace . Myspace jumpoff<Baconator. Baconater<Spicy Chicken.

yeah, that sucks. I wish they’d bring back the “big bacon classic.” I’m sure the pictures of that burger were way more awesome than reality, too. But at least they tasted good.

Are you SURE you didn’t get a Bacon Double by mistake?
Bummer nonetheless.

I feel for you, I had a similar experience (http://lordsofbacon.com/2008/06/baconator-go-on-obsess-little.html) with Wendy’s sorry excuse for a bacon cheeseburger. Aren’t there laws about truth in advertising? Well I am sure there are, but they obviously are pretty vague when it comes to marketing photos.

unlucky you. this certainly isn’t standard though - i’ve had some fucking incredible baconators.

I fully understand the heartbreak that the Baconator always seems to bring out. notatoad is sort of right, there are great Baconators out there. My first Baconator was simply awesome. Crispy curly bacon like in the picture, great cheese meltyness and the burgers patties were greasy goodness. Sadly the next 10 after that were a huge disappointment and I almost gave up. Then I had another super awesome one. I’m now at my 10th one after that again and am hoping I get another good one. I secretly think it’s a marketing ploy. Give one good one for every 10 to keep me buying them!

Maybe it’s because I’m not American but to me even the one on the left looks disgusting. Is there something in your genes that makes you consider a mound of fatty, artificially processed calories something desirable?

still tasty

I’ve been eating the Big Bacon Classic at Wendy’s since the early 80’s. It’s all you ever need in a bacon cheeseburger.

I worked with a professional model builder… all the stuff in the photos are not real… not even food… they are models build of plastic…
no truth in advertising at all… ever…
and if you buy a hamburger and it’s not up to snuff after your first bite… walk right back up to the counter and return it for something else… the only way to get any complaint across is to actually make a complaint at that moment… one bite out of any food and you can take it back… (one bite only is “proper edict”)… just get up off your butt and walk right back up to the counter… past all the people in line and say in a loud and clear voice this is does not taste right… they will bend over backwards to help you and then they will never want it to happen again…
the only way to effect change is to immediately step up… any later complaining and your just wining about it… so stop your winning and complain immediately where and when it will get results…
and you can also open the wrapper and tell them “that does not look like the photo.. fix it”… they will or they will return your money… demand it… it your right… so do it…

Yup. They mutated right after we broke free from the shackles of European tyranny…

I don’t have that much sympathy (and not just because I am a vegetarian) but because no burger ever looks like the marketing picture. Although I do have to admit the real burger looks absolutely disgusting, the marketing one doesn’t look that much better.
