GOING OUT NEW YEAR’S EVE

PRO: It’s New Year’s Eve and at least you did something, even if the party sucked.
CON: 60% chance the party will suck.

PRO: Everyone else is out having fun: dressed up, drunk, and lively.
CON: You see most of these people on a weekly basis: dressed up, drunk, and lively.

PRO: There will be snacks and hors d’oeuvres!
CON: There will never be enough snacks to drown out the monotony.

PRO: You’ll feel like a loser sitting at home.
CON: You’ll feel like a loser sitting at a party.

PRO: You like dancing and drinking.
CON: Both combined = blackmail moment.

PRO: It will be a night of drinking champagne.
CON: It will be a night of drinking champagne.

PRO: This is a chance to celebrate the passing of 2008, a decent year.
CON: This is a chance to watch TV and go to sleep early.

PRO: You might get lucky.
CON: You might not.

PRO: You need to go out, have fun, be social.
CON: Falling asleep on the couch in your underwear while watching buddy cop movies is secretly more satisfying.

Minority Report – Only Years Away

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

On December 11, the Japanese Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (Computational Neuroscience Laboratories) provided the press with these two sets of images. The top set of characters was shown to a test subject, and the bottom set was scanned from the brain of the test subject.

Yes – black and white image snapshots from the human mind.

By using fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging), the ATRI-CNL team was able to map bloodflow patterns in the visual cortex of test subjects. With the aid of software and voodoo, they were able to reconstruct the images “seen” in the mind of the test subjects.
Holy sh!t!

Super-cool technology we can expect to see from this:
• “Dream photography.”
• Witnesses producing mental photographs of perpetrators and crime scenes.
• Communication with the paralyzed/comatose.
• Espionage: photography of sensitive/classified materials from memories.
• Testing “psychic abilities” by photographing “visions.”
• Marketing development: learning what images “stick.”
• Real-to-mind artwork: photographing your artistic vision.

Photo of the Day: The Lemonator

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I was recently back at my parents’ house in California, where we’ve had for a long time a troubled lemon tree that yields only a few fruit per year. This year was no exception, as it only bore two lemons– yet somehow this monster was one of them:

Giant Lemon!

According to the Interwebs, it turns out that my lemon is nowhere near the world’s largest. Apparently a farmer in Israel found a lemon in 2003 that was 11 pounds and 9.7 ounces… That’s like a giant baby!

Die Hard – Who Died

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Die Hard – not only the best action movie ever, but also the best Christmas movie ever.

I was watching it today and felt compelled to create this handy graphic to keep track of the terrorist deaths in Die Hard. A drinking game could be based on this somehow.

And yes, I am a nerd for making this.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Brad PittThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Cate Blanchett

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Great special effects;
Brad Pitt looked ninety years old.
But you’ll spend three hours.

Cate Blanchett is great,
Even as an old lady.
A strange but good film.

Frost/Nixon

Frost/Nixon

A blast from the past,
Nixon has a sweaty lip;
Worth your ten dollars

Entertaining flick.
Frost looks just like John Edwards
Check this movie out.

Valkyrie

Valkyrie

Explosions were cool;
Militaries are complex;
Hitler was a douche.

Cruise can’t speak German;
This movie put me to sleep;
Ultra depressing.

Santa-cons

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Not to be confused with SantaCon, earlier today I was struggling to design a suitable Santa Claus emoticon (most posted on the internet look like Gary Oldman or Homer Simpson).
Here are the ones I came up with:

Merry Christmas!!!

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

In an experiment to see if Thanksgiving “Hand Turkey” technology can translate to other holidays, I’ve generated a few “Hand Santa” prototypes for your holiday enjoyment.

Scoliosis Santa – This one is Santa with a spinal injury or Santa on a trampoline.

Swandive Santa – This is Santa Claus plummeting from a great height.

Spread Eagle Santa – This one simply says “Santa is ready for some lovin’.”

Santapus – This one was an experiment to see what Santa would look like as an octopus (yeah, I know, he only has five legs – I don’t have eight fingers you moron).
