SantaCon 2008
December 17th, 2008 by HeywoodLast Saturday, in cities across the country, people from all walks of life and all religious denominations united, dressed as variations of Santa Claus, to drink, carouse and be merry. As part of SantaCon NYC, I met up with close to 1000 people and ran around New York en masse, from Grand Central Station to South Street Seaport, and many bars in between. Below are some photos, and check out a cool Flickr photo pool here.
For those curious about the history, the first SantaCon took place in 1994 in San Francisco as part of a demonstration by the Cacophony Society. Since, it has spread to Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, Chicago, New York, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, San Jose, Washington DC, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Steamboat Springs, Austin, Vancouver, London, Tokyo, and even McMurdo Station in Antarctica! If you’re thinking about participating next year (which I strongly encourage), consider getting your santa suit early, online, when they’re cheapest. Say, in January?

Isabel: I urge you to find a party shop and buy the crappiest santa suit you can find, that still looks like a santa suit. mine is half decent; best $35 I’ve ever spent.

or you can go as any other assortment of holiday merriment, maybe a reindeer, an elf, Hanukkah harry?

Good suggestions all the way around. HOWEVER, snow storm coming. I dont’ see myself trekking around Boston in a snow storm. I’m sure there will still be plenty o’ people. But again, ALAS, now I am santa suit-less AND still a California weather wussy. He!
