Skilled Fingers vs. Too Much Free Time

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Okay, I’ll admit it: I was looking up Daft Punk videos on YouTube.  I came across this video, and I still don’t know what to make of it… except that this person’s fingers are a lot more flexible than mine.

Daft Hands: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

And then there’s the obvious, poor choice in green bracelet jewelry.

And Then Worktime Productivity Dropped Even Lower…

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

These days, with the proliferation of the internets, libraries and all things bookish have had to get creative to keep readers interested, let alone attract new readers.  Enter the New Zealand Book Council.  In what can easily be described as, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” logic, the NZBC has created www.readatwork.com

It’s a website that displays a windows desktop, except all the folders are filled with literature in PowerPoint format.  You can literally read Animal Farm on PowerPoint slides.  Now you can stick it to your boss and actually claim to be productive at the same time!

Mark Twain anyone?

Athletic Commission To Allow Technological Advantage

Friday, May 16th, 2008

South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius has won the right to compete for a place in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  The AP reports that the “Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the 21-year-old South African is eligible to race against able-bodied athletes, overturning a ban imposed by the International Association of Athletics Federations.”

As part of the overruling of the ban, Oscar Pistorius asked to have independent testing done at MIT.  This story is special to me because I was living in Cambridge when random (able-bodied) people were bouncing down the street wearing the now-infamous cheetah blades. I can only assume that those people were either involved in conducting the tests or out for joyrides on blades of their own.  While this story is certainly a departure from what I typically contribute to Blogadilla, the ruling marks an important day for both disabled people and able bodied people as well.  Check out the story on ESPN.

Facebook Programmer Nerds: 1 Stalkers: 0

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Via Gawker.com, this just in: a “facebook tipster” (aka facebook programmer) reports that from one’s facebook page, the tables can easily be turned on the five people who stalk you most!

Simply click in the search area on the lefthand column and press the down arrow. Et voila, there it is: five people who previously thought they could watch you from a-far. Wah wah wah.

Post Script: Gawker also notes that this fact is something to share with nerds. Consider yourselves shared-with. I certainly did.

UPDATE: Somewhat mysteriously, the ‘cheat’ requirements have been modified.  Interested parties will now need to hit the spacebar followed by the down arrow.  Mr. Zuckerberg, you are one TRICKY TRICKY man.

BPOW: For the Adventuresome 21+ Crowd

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

This week’s Bacon Product of the Week is a re-cap and review of earlier BPOWs. The Baltimore Sun’s reporter Sam Sessa checks in from Capt. Larry’s Bar where they are serving our beloved bacon vodka (!!).

Sam’s review gets off to a rough start describing the special treat, ruining our mental-imagery moment by talking about Beggin’ Strips dog treats, but then goes on to describe it as having, “a robust, meaty aroma that pleased the palette, grounded by a sharp undercurrent of liquor.”

Sam mentions in his own posted comments about the article mention he wanted to chase his porky vodka goodness with a scrabbled egg-tini, but the bartender would not oblige. Bummer.

Oh Steve Balmer, What Were You Thinking!?

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Here are two photos from the Digg front page that were too irresistible to pass up.  Say what you will about Microsoft, Apple, and the people who use them, but no one can argue that this is simply not smart business!

Vintage MJ, with Context!

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Oh Heywood, you did beat me to it. But here’s the background that makes these early 80s clips worth watching: this video has only recently been released, and was shot by Juan Martin, who shot the footage for Spanish television. He has been holding onto it for years, and for MJ fans like myself (and Heywood), old video like this is digital gold!
