Hippo-Tastic!

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Often a feared animal that has been known to attack humans, this South African hippo is anything but ferocious.  She’s smart: she knows were the unlimited supply of food is, and can even open doors!  From the looks of it, she probably thinks just she’s an oversized dog!

Walk it out, Gwen

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

This has been around the Internet a little based on its 900,000+ YouTube views, but when I saw it today it was new to me and there was no question that it’s Blogadilla material.

I’m a big fan of mashups, but this is a mashup of a different style: music mashed with video. In 2006, Atlanta DJ and rap artist Unk released the addictive track “Walk It Out.” Shortly after, someone took a video clip from a 1960s TV show featuring Gwen Verdon (third wife of Bob Fosse and one of the best dancers of her time) dancing to a song called “Mexican Breakfast,” and had the idea to lay the rap track over the video. I can’t tell you what spurred the idea in the first place, but I can tell you is that the mix works out amazingly well. Check it out for yourself, and then for reference afterward, see the original.

Olga and Vova Galchenko: Jugglers Extraordinaire

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Just over a year ago, Time Magazine profiled a brother/sister juggling team, Olga and Vova Galchenko, the so called “Juggling Geniuses.” Time compiled 10 of their videos, which go as far back as 1997, when the brother-sister pair was only 10 and 7, respectively.

Their skill is impressive, as is the fact that they’ve journeyed from a tiny home in Penza, Russia, all the way to Hollywood– check out Vova below as a young boy, and later in a Fatboy Slim video with some amazing shots:

Timbaland: Super Producer or Super Plagiarizer?

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Having just posted a mashup I made of a songs by Moby and Timbaland, I have been looking around the Internet for material on both artists. This issue surfaced back in January of this year, but I just became aware of it and had to post about it because I’m just blown away.

Apparently in the song “Do It” by Nelly Furtado (which Timbaland “wrote” and produced), Tim lifted a significant portion of a “Acidjazzed Evening,” written and produced in 2000 by a little-known Finnish musician named Janne Suni AKA “Tempest.” Timbaland didn’t ask Suni for permission, nor did he clear the sample prior to making this song. Sure, sampling happens all the time, but it is legitimate and this simply is not.  What Timbaland has done is blatantly plagiarize, taking credit for creating something that someone else created.

I’ll be fair: “Do It” is a hot track in its own right, but Timbaland’s theft is so blatant, it’s amazing. Check out a YouTube video comparing the songs, as well as a ringtone that Timbaland “wrote” in 2005, also ripping off “Acidjazzed Evening”:

Apparently both sides have lawyers and are talking, so perhaps a settlement is in the works.  Timbaland, however, has publicly scoffed at this issue, saying that this happens all the time and isn’t something anyone should be worrying about.  Still, though, the music sounds identical.

Everything Is Better In Slow Motion Vol. 3

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

I’m not sure why whoever made this video compilation was so obsessed with people getting hit in the face, but a lot of these slow-mo clips are quite cool.

It may be obvious to some, but the explanation as to how people can get such good shots is that the cameras used record these videos capture many more frames per second than ‘normal’ video cameras, and thus can be slowed down tremendously.

Czech it out:

(The water balloon video I initially posted is included in this compilation, but it’s cool enough that it can be seen twice)

French Long Jumper Speared by Errant Javelin

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Yep, you read me right. Salim Sdiri was warming up to compete in the long jump at the Golden Gala in Rome on Friday (the 13th!) when Finnish thrower Tero Pitkamaki slipped while hurling his javelin.

The result: the javelin flew out of the left side of the normal competition area and left Sdiri with a 1 inch punchout in his right side.

Amazingly, Sdiri was not seriously hurt internally, which makes this all the more amazing as well as something I’m able to joke a bit about. I mean, couldn’t Pitkamaki at least have yelled, “Fooooooore” ?

Live from the Front Lines: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

First of all, Happy 4th of July to all you ‘Dillas out there.

Today I journeyed to Coney Island to witness the 92nd annual Nathan’s International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest. It was a battle for the ages, with Joey Chestnut demolishing his own recently-set world record of 59.5 franks, but still only narrowly beating out Takeru “The Tsunami” Kobayashi in total HDBs (Hot Dog and Buns) consumed. Chestnut scarfed down an amazing 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes, with Kobayashi ‘close’ behind at 63.

While it was difficult to get close to the actual competitors, the atmosphere was fantastic, as 30,000 people turned out for the event and an estimated 1.5 million people watched on TV.

Paris (not France!) vs. Iraq . . . which is more newsworthy?

I wish more journalists would be like Mika Brzezinski, but one must wonder if she’ll be able to keep her job after this (even though it certainly is admirable):

Beached Whale + Dynamite = Dear God

Friday, June 8th, 2007

There really are no words to describe this newscast, which is clearly from another era…

One memorable quote:

The humor of the entire situation suddenly gave way to a run for survival as huge chunks of whale blubber fell everywhere.” –News Anchor

[postscript/update (by Timbotron)]:
Son of Exploding Whale - Three years ago. Tainan, Taiwan. 60-ton dead spermwhale in transit to Cheng Kung National University for necropsy. Gasses from decay built up. The whale exploded. The 100+ bystanders (who had gathered to comment on its enormous penis) were flecked with decaying viscera.

StreetView’d

For a bit more StreetView fun, check out MapMole.com.  People post what they’ve discovered via Streetview, and then the results are rated in Digg-format.

Here are a few of the pictures that have been discovered and collected– many of them are hilarious, or otherwise remarkable/intriguing.  For instance:

Real life Spiderman…or as close as you can get

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

I’ve been getting really into rock climbing of late, and while I feel like I’m making progress, I watch videos like this and realize that compared to guys like Chris Sharma, I suck majorly… Enjoy!

Animal Planet…Gone Wild

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Bad puns aside, when I saw the description of this video on YouTube, I found it nearly impossible to believe. But low and behold, this is indeed a battle between about 6 lions and a herd of (30+) water buffalo. And if that wasn’t enough for you, even a few crocodiles get in the mix. Check out the insanity (though be warned that this video is 8 minutes long– even so, it’s worth it in my mind):
