Monthly Mashup Vol. 4 - Beautiful Soulja Girlz

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

This month, I combined the South’s hottest new dance track “Crank That Soulja Boy” by the aptly named ‘Soulja Boy’ with Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” & The Shop Boyz’ “Party Like a Rockstar.” Enjoy!

Mini-Britney vs. New Mini-Britney

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
Thank God.
The L.A. Times reports that there is a “new Mini-Britney” Vegas stage act, replacing a previous inferior (”mini-but-less-Britney“) stage act. Oh good . . . I was worried about that previous one.
Oops, you did it again Vegas.

Stevie Wonder … Damn!

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Most people don’t know it, but Stevie Wonder plays more than just keyboards. Check out this awesome video of Stevie showing his harmonica skillz alongside an absolute legend– Toots Thielemans. It’s amazing to me how the two of them can communicate so well via music alone…

He also just goes off on drums here, but I don’t want to clutter the frontpage with video. Enjoy!

SexyBack

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Ok, what I was really searching for was a montage of all the 4th wall breaking smirks and eyebrow raising shots from The Office set to some funny ghetto fabulous 50 Cent song, etc (…someone must have spent hours and hours doing something completely useless like that right)?

But, this is just as funny…

2007 MTV VMA’s

Monday, September 10th, 2007

If you missed the MTV VMA’s last night, which is totally understandable if you did because, well, MTV sucks; you should at least check out Sarah Silverman’s opening bit which followed a less than amateur performance by Britney Spears. Silverman’s comedic style is so well suited for hosting award shows because she’s great at creating an awkward setting and is not afraid to call out certain “celebrities” for being stupid people in “real life.” Overall the show seemed to lack any genuine excitement. I’m not surprised. There is something about today’s American pop-culture that is disgustingly reminiscent about high school to me. Whatever…I’m blogging about it, which is what they want, right? Anyhow, watch the clip. You’ll feel pleasantly uncomfortable.

Monthly Mashup Vol. 3 - Summer Love in the Disco Club

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Pop music: so bad but so good.

In my latest monthly mashup, I try to prove that 2+2 = 5 by mixing two pop songs (The Black Eyed Peas’ “Disco Club” with Justin Timberlake’s “Summer Love”), with the hope that the sum, in fact, is greater than the parts. Also, this is a fitting end to summer, which I’m sad to see go. Enjoy, and free to comment!

Hunka-Hunka Peanut Butter and Banana

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Thirty years ago today (August 16th), Elvis Aaron Presley “left the building” forever. In an odd yet brilliant marketing move, Reese’s (Hershey’s) released the commemorative limited-edition Peanut Butter and Banana Creme cup (Elvis was fond of peanut butter and banana sandwiches [recipe]).

Animoto Launch in 3…2…1…

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

A couple days ago I posted about Animoto- a very cool web service that I’ve been alpha testing for the past few months. In the most basic of descriptions (and this really doesn’t do Animoto justice), the site matches your photos to music for a unique, one of a kind “slideshow.” Honestly though, it’s super cool– like nothing else I’ve ever seen.

So, to honor their public beta launch today at around 3:22am Eastern Time, and mostly because Animoto rocks the hizouse, I was fortunate enough to convince Brad Jefferson, Co-Founder and CEO of Animoto.com to give us an exclusive interview. Thanks Brad, and thanks Animoto! Enjoy, and definitely go check out the site! [for some nitty gritty details, check out the Animoto Press Kit]

BLOGADILLA: Animoto is an entirely new way to interact with and view photos. What is the vision behind the project? Has your team’s vision changed as you’ve developed the site, or has it remained constant from the beginning?

BRAD: Part of the vision for Animoto is to catch the internet up to the type of production value commonly seen in film and television, and then give that type of production value to people in a way that is simple yet powerful. Our technology is focused on emulating the actual process that a post-production crew for film and television goes through. To that end, the fun part is that our Cinematic Artificial Intelligence algorithm is really more of an art than a science so the potential for improvement is unending.

BLOGADILLA: What do you see as the main target for Animoto: to operate as a standalone entity, or to interface with existing websites, such as myspace, facebook, etc?

BRAD: Short answer, all the above! We see Animoto.com as the place where users create, collect, share and view Animoto videos but the consumption of Animoto videos is not limited to our website. Through a partnership with an interesting company called Clearspring, our users can post their Animoto videos to any website, such as social network sites like MySpace and Facebook, with a click of a button. We plan to also allow consumption of Animoto videos through cell phones and ipods in the future.

3 IS the magic number

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

My friend Ari has been keeping me posted via email on the wear abouts of Lily Allen ever since I professed my love of her. Here’s his latest “save-it-for-the-hearing” entry in our shared obsession of Lily. It turns out, like Marky Mark, she has a third nipple.

“Someone told me blogging seems to have replaced confessions. So I shall proceed with 5 hail marys, a handful or our fathers, and promise not to stalk Lily . . .I’ll just follow her home to make sure she’s safe” -Ari Sawyer

Lily says that apparently one in every ten people has a third nipple, so, that would mean that at least one Blogadilla member has one. Check those “moles” people.

Cracked Pepper

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

I regret not getting my hands on any of the d.j. DC “Beastles” mash-ups (The Beatles + Beastie Boys) before he took them off his site.

Alas, CCC / Ill Chemist offer forth their sweet, sweet Beatles mash-ups: “Cracked Pepper” (Beatles + everyone).

Chocolate Rain

a). What the hell is “Chocolate Rain”?!
(likely not what it meant in elementary school)

b). What the hell is this song about?!

c). Where can I get the “Chocolate Rain” ringtone?!

More dancing craziness…

Daisy Duke was “talented”, but I don’t think she could do this. If nothing else, at least skip to the end to view their finale. (I wonder how long that potato salad had sat out in the sun?!)

Walk it out, Gwen

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

This has been around the Internet a little based on its 900,000+ YouTube views, but when I saw it today it was new to me and there was no question that it’s Blogadilla material.

I’m a big fan of mashups, but this is a mashup of a different style: music mashed with video. In 2006, Atlanta DJ and rap artist Unk released the addictive track “Walk It Out.” Shortly after, someone took a video clip from a 1960s TV show featuring Gwen Verdon (third wife of Bob Fosse and one of the best dancers of her time) dancing to a song called “Mexican Breakfast,” and had the idea to lay the rap track over the video. I can’t tell you what spurred the idea in the first place, but I can tell you is that the mix works out amazingly well. Check it out for yourself, and then for reference afterward, see the original.

Timbaland: Super Producer or Super Plagiarizer?

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Having just posted a mashup I made of a songs by Moby and Timbaland, I have been looking around the Internet for material on both artists. This issue surfaced back in January of this year, but I just became aware of it and had to post about it because I’m just blown away.

Apparently in the song “Do It” by Nelly Furtado (which Timbaland “wrote” and produced), Tim lifted a significant portion of a “Acidjazzed Evening,” written and produced in 2000 by a little-known Finnish musician named Janne Suni AKA “Tempest.” Timbaland didn’t ask Suni for permission, nor did he clear the sample prior to making this song. Sure, sampling happens all the time, but it is legitimate and this simply is not.  What Timbaland has done is blatantly plagiarize, taking credit for creating something that someone else created.

I’ll be fair: “Do It” is a hot track in its own right, but Timbaland’s theft is so blatant, it’s amazing. Check out a YouTube video comparing the songs, as well as a ringtone that Timbaland “wrote” in 2005, also ripping off “Acidjazzed Evening”:

Apparently both sides have lawyers and are talking, so perhaps a settlement is in the works.  Timbaland, however, has publicly scoffed at this issue, saying that this happens all the time and isn’t something anyone should be worrying about.  Still, though, the music sounds identical.

For more specific, continuously updated information, check out the wikipedia page on this controversy.

Monthly Mashup Vol. 2 - The Hymn I Are

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

That’s right folks, it’s time for another Monthly Mashup. This time, I took Timbaland’s “The Way I Are” and crossed it with Moby’s “Hymn. ” Enjoy!

Music Sites Powered by Web 2.0

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

It’s no doubt that Web 2.0 can often be categorized by sites with pastel colors and rounded edges, but there’s a ton of cool technology that has developed amongst all the pretty designs. Some of the coolest new stuff profiles you as a user and compares it to all sorts of data (including your friends and random strangers) to come up with a breakdown of stuff you know you like, as well as stuff you didn’t know you’d like (or at least, that’s the point). Here’s a few of my favorite music-oriented sites I’ve discovered:

- This site used to be known as “AudioScrobbler”, but changed it’s name and then was sold to CBS. You run a small program (for all OS’s) on your computer, and it watches the music you listen to. It compares your music listening habits to those of all the other users on the site, then provides internet radio (free!) of not only your music, but other artists that you’ll probably like. Here’s my profile (for a sample of what it looks like).

- This site pools together all the mp3’s posted on various music blogs across the web. Do a search for one of your favorite artists and you’re bound to find some new tracks - covers and live versions in particular. You can also snag the RSS feed for an artist, import it into iTunes, and voila - instant free downloads of those tracks.

LivePlasma - Utilizes the Amazon database of “User’s who bought this, also bought…” to give you a map of artists related to your entered artist. This one works for movies as well - be warned that it’s not very forgiving of misspellings, and a lot of the more obscure artists don’t show up at all. Definitely fun to play with, though.

- This is for the lucky iPhone owners out there, although it works on a normal browser as well. Similar to HypeMachine, this pools together all the mp3’s it can find on the web and offers full listens through the interface. The iPhone version looks amazing on the phones with an interface emulating the iPhone iTunes almost exactly.

Please feel free to share your favorite Web 2.0 music sites in the comments section!
