Photo of the Week

I didn’t have to courage to go in there and meet Arreola in person, but I suspect she is tan and round and sensitive.

Book Reviews: Wanderlust and Point It

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Two books I am currently in love with (and they have no words, only pictures):

“Wanderlust” by Troy M. Litten - A wonderful collection of travel photos that sum-up a profound principle: the journey can be as dynamic as the destination. Litten’s photos capture the world of transit around the globe: an orange-tiled hotel bathroom, cryptic restroom signs, airplane meals, greasy food carts on the street, vivid taxi paintjobs, cups of coffee in 18 different hotels and restaurants.

“Point It” by Dieter Graf - this book just may be the most brilliant travel tool ever devised. Graf has created a language-free travel dictionary; namely, it is a pocket-sized book of photos of nearly anything that one would need (or one might encounter) while travelling. You don’t know the Russian word for “eggplant” - just point at the picture of it on the vegetable page. You can’t speak Mandarin and you want to know what meat you’re eating - the waiter can point to the deer, the cow, the goat, the bunny, the elk . . .

Dieter Graf, thank you for saving my ass in Estonia more than once.

Praise The Lord Dental

I’m afraid to imagine the dental experience at this place in Harlem if I don’t praise the lord…

(Thanks Dominik!)

Twins

Monday, September 24th, 2007

My older sister is gigantically pregnant with twins and is currently in the hospital (they are on their way in the next couple of days). Last week, Garry (a.k.a. “Dirty Taco”) and I did a bodypainting photoshoot with her and her unborn. Here are some of the results - painted by yours truly and photographed by Garry.

All our best to the parents to be, Heather and Adam.

Introducing….Animoto

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Over the last few months, I’ve been lucky enough to be an alpha-tester for Animoto, a new photo-sharing portal that’s set to launch to the general public on Tuesday August 14.

Animoto is unlike anything I’ve ever used before, so it’s hard to describe the service concisely. The guys at Animoto describe themselves as “helping people better share their stories and express themselves through online media” and their tagline “Welcome to the end of slideshows” is, in my opinion, fairly descriptive of what their service will do to the world of sharing images and stories online.

So, what does Animoto actually do? Well, instead of just uploading photos to share on a website like Flickr or Snapfish, on Animoto, you upload your photos, pick a song to go along with the photos, and submit the whole package. The team uses their patent-pending cinematic artificial intelligence technology and high-end motion design to create a one-of-a-kind, professionally-produced video of your photos that play and almost dance along with the soundtrack. Check out a video I made in memory of my dog that passed away this past year (she was 14 years old, so it’s ok):

Potti Pals

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Man, I wish I was making this up. I saw this at a gas station bathroom yesterday. Their yellow coloring is not vandalism, they were printed this way. What are they even named? The Driplets? The Potti Pals? The Number Ones? The Spatters? Coffee, Asparagus, and Vitamins?

I was too afraid to see what characters were next to the toilet.

Picture of the week!

Not just for the survival kit anymore!

So each week I will attempt to do an interesting picture post from my collection. The story behind this one is coming up with fun incentives/bribes for our son to try potty training.
The latest was the glow stick! He loved it! Even made it to nap time, the normal soft furry rabbit got ejected.

Her Own Worst Enemy

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

[NSFL - Not Safe For Lunch]
Everybody has that one friend who frequently falls victim to their own clumsiness - the person voted “Most Likely To Accidentally Die By Their Own Hands.” My friend Heather is this person - a master of accidental self-inflicted injury. She began photo-documenting her injuries this year and will soon release an online photogallery/journal (its upcoming release is a Blogadilla exclusive - stay tuned).

Here are samples of some of her more recent injuries (clockwise from top left):

•Fell out of a windowsill (luckily fell inside) and did a face-plant : carpet burn and one and a half black eyes.

•Her most recent injury: shaving her legs

•Infected hangnail

•Stubbed and broke her pinky toe (notice the purple)

Nice photgraphy. Cool desktops.

Check out Mandolux for some nice photography available as desktop image downloads. Many of them have been made available for dual displays, which rules! Humorous titles, too.

Google self censor?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

So a cool feature to Google’s picasa software is photo mapping all your images on google maps.

Funny thing is the link they provide for seeing an example is in violation of their own agreements! WTF?

Nice!

Postcard from Iraq.

Monday, June 18th, 2007

I don’t know about you, but I certainly feel a lot better about the situation in Iraq after seeing this sign posted at Saddam Hussein’s former palace.

No drinking while armed

By the way, the people in the photo aren’t the subjects of some strange military experiment (although that would be pretty cool). Using the wonders of Adobe Photoshop, I simply blurred them out to keep their identities secret–I mean, anonymous.

The Face Transformer

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

This utterly rocks: The St. Andrew’s Perception Laboratory’s Face Transformer. I did experiments on my wife:

The “CHILD” transformation looks like Thora Birch.
And “BABY” is just creepy.

Random2.0

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Almost daily I find myself meandering online repositories of “2.0″ish websites either to gain design inspiration or to reference the code for my own current web projects. Along the way I’ve come across some pretty interesting and random online applications. Here are a few of my recent finds:

QuitrSavr.com

QuitrSaver

This little application is designed to help you stop smoking by allowing you to create a widget that tracks how much money you save by quitting. It even generates the necessary code to embed the widget into your own site. Check it out ›

Imagini.net

Imagini

Imagini is another online community; however, they have taken an interesting approach to social networking — Images. I know, I know: Flickr has already done this, right? True. But the difference lies in how these images/photos are used. Through a process of selecting a series of photos based on your personal preferences, this application is able to create a personality profile, which they are branding as VisualDNA. I have to say, the profile it created for me was uncannily accurate. Once you have a profile, you can then connect to other users with similar VisualDNA. Take a look ›

I love these random uses and applications of all the latest web-based technologies.
