Today we are proud to offer you the results of a 30-day investigation into the mechanics of “mood rings.” Though most mood rings come with a color guide to help you understand the meaning of each of the colors, we have come to find that most of these guides are totally incorrect. Below is a more accurate guide to the colors of mood rings, based upon 63 total hours of original scientific observation at Blogadilla Laboratories.

We hope that this contribution to science will once again benefit humanity in the way that so many of our other works have.

You may be a tetrachromat: very rare and super human.

A tetrachromat is sort of like being a super taster of color vision. To date, only two or three people have been identified as potential tetrachromats.

You might be one.

In simple terms, here’s how normal color vision works:
We all have three types of color photoreceptive cells in the back of our eyes (the retina) – which are often called the red, green, and blue “cones.” We are trichromats. Each of these ‘flavors’ of cone is sensitive to a particular range of colors of the spectrum. And usually when we perceive a color, it is the result of a combination of signals from more than one flavor of cone. For example, seeing “orange” is the result of a moderate signal from a green cone and a stronger signal from a red cone. And we are able to distinguish the range of orange hues from each other by the different strengths of green and red cone signals that each orange hue generates (darker orange would have a stronger red signal, etc).

What would happen if you had a fourth cone, an extra color photoreceptor?
If you are a tetrachromat, the most likely scenario is that you have a mutant form of the red cone while also having normal form of the red cone – two types of red cones that are sensitive to slightly different ranges of the red end of the color spectrum. You would not be able to see extra colors the rest of us can’t (sadly, no ultraviolet vision, etc.), but you would be able to make distinctions between very similar colors that the rest of us cannot. Two samples that would look like the same color of red to me would look like dramatically different reds to a tetrachromat.

The most likely candidate for being a tetrachromat:
• You are a woman
• You have men with red/green colorblindness in your family.
• In particular, you have a son or father with red/green colorblindness.

Blogadilla co-author Allison and I decided that we can make better “tiki bar” drinks than most Tiki Bar franchises. Here’s the first installment of what we’ve dubbed “The Boozadilla Project” – behold “Noah’s Ark”:

Noah’s Ark ingredients:
• 1 watermelon
• plastic animals
• 2 shots vodka
• 2 shots white rum
• 2 shots coconut rum
• 2 shots gin
Get it? “Noah’s Ark” – 2 of everything
• 2 shots fruity-flavored schnapps
• 2 shots lime juice
• 2 shots grenadine
• 1 cup pineapple juice
• 1 cup grape soda or strawberry soda
• 1 tray of ice cubes
• 1 sharp knife
• 1 large spoon
• 2-4 straws

Step 1: Cut the top of the watermelon into the ‘ark’ shape above, remove the inside of the watermelon with the large spoon. Cut windows into the side (near the top) of the watermelon, place animals in the windows.

Step 2: Pour all of the ingredients into the hollowed-out watermelon. Garnish with tiny umbrellas.

Serves 2 to 4 people.

And when you’re done drinking, the watermelon also makes a great helmet!

Earlier this month, researcher/historian David Giovannoni (at First Sounds) discovered the earliest recording of a human voice, from the archives of the French Academy of Sciences. According to records, this sound recording was made by inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville on April 9, 1860 – 17 years before Thomas Edison. The recording was made on Scott de Martinville’s “phonautograph” which records sound onto a carbon (smoke)-blackened paper. Though his machine successfully recorded a human voice, Scott de Martinville had no means to play back the recording. This recording was scanned, processed, and converted into an audible clip at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
